Breed characteristics
The Maine Coon is one of the most popular cat breeds in the world today, and the number of them is increasing every year in Hungary as well. Not by chance, it is a family-friendly cat breed with an extremely intelligent, unique appearance and equally unique characteristics, with a calm and kind nature. Many of them are owner-obsessed, like a dog follows the owner in the apartment, is always in the room where the owner is, likes to be in contact with people. It has a quiet nature, does not keeps on meowing, is calm, balanced, but jumps whenever a butterfly or fly flies in, his hunting instinct immediately emerges. Most of them don’t like being held in hand as much as they know that they are heavy, they prefer to be on their own feet, they prefer to snuggle up and lie on their owner, even while the owner watches TV, in such a case they are of course less interested in knowing that they know that they are heavy.
Its most characteristic appearance is its unique, lynx-like ear tufts, which only the Maine Coon has among breed cats. In addition, the fur of a semi-long-haired, neuter cat requires surprisingly little care, it is capable of maintaining itself so that its fur is always shiny and tidy.Or at least if it lives in an apartment.

A brief history
Outwardly, the Maine Coon is most similar to the Norwegian forest cat, but its distinctive ear tassels make it different from all existing cat breeds, because only the Maine Coon wears such an ear tassels. And the lynx wears similar, but that is a slightly bigger cat. There are many legends about its origin, none of which have been proven, the most likely is that the Norwegian forest cats were brought by the immigrants to the United States on their ships as rat and mouse catchers, so they could end up in the state of Maine, where it later became the state’s national cat. It already appeared at exhibitions in the early 1900s, but it only gained real popularity worldwide in the last 2-3 decades, and still has been conquering ever since. In Europe, it received recognition for breeding in 1983.

Body structure and color
The Maine Coon is a relatively large cat, with a broad chest and muscular body. Its relatively stocky and strong legs are usually of medium length, its paws are large and round, with long tufts of fur between its toes, it has real snow-stomping paws. Tails are long, males are larger and more powerful, collared like lions, although in some bloodlines the females are almost as large, in most cases females are much slimmer and smaller, around 5-6 kg. These cats develop slowly, they can reach the age of four by their final body size is developed. Its color can be a variety of classic colors, such as black, blue, white, red, cream and tortie, with or without a tabby pattern. Characteristic is the contrasting Maine Coon color with white socks and white neck, an extremely popular type in its various colors. The tabby pattern can be striped (mackerel), classic and spotted. The eye color can be any – in snow-white or white cats the eyes can be blue or two different colors, half-coloured.

We regularly participate in international cat shows organized by MMME, which judges based on the American system of TICA, in Lurdy Ház shopping center in Budapest, and we often appear as an exhibitor at cat shows organized by other associations as well.
